Editorial

Without wishing to tempt providence, the theatre is doing OK at the moment.  Dirty Dusting was the best selling production in recent times and received great reviews.  The pantomime, Camelot, is well into rehearsals and promises to be equally successful.  The programme for next year is being firmed up and should have mass appeal.  Harmony has a great new programme of Christmas songs for the party on 17 December and Norman McIntosh and others continue the relentless programme of getting the theatre materially up together.  However we need our members to support the performances and club nights – that is what keeps the theatre alive!

If you know of anybody with sufficient musical knowledge and interest to help out Harmony please contact Spotlight or the numbers shown.

Barbara Lewis

Most members are now aware that sadly Barbara Lewis died on September 9th just a few days after her 84th birthday. Barbara had a stroke in May 2025 and was unable to communicate or cope on her own afterwards and spent the last year of her life in her house in Emba, being cared for 24 hours a day by her Filipina carer.

Barbara had been involved with Stage One for many years and as well as being a Front of House manager on several occasions and assisting during auditions, had mostly been responsible for prompting many productions. She was invaluable to many Directors who relied on her commitment and expertise.   Many of us actors were also grateful that she was in the prompt box, mouthing our words along with us!

She had requested that Stage One donate to the Alzheimer's Association in her memory and this has been done.

She will be greatly missed by her friends here and we send our condolences to her large family in the the UK who will be visiting later this year.

Lost Property

The cardigan shown here was left in the theatre a short time ago.  If it is yours or you recognise it, please contact the Theatre Manager Jenny Jacobson or reply to Spotlight.

Auntie Prue’s Advice Column.

Dear Auntie Prue

I have been bothered yet again by this ridiculous American import “Trick or Treat”.  I flatly refuse to “treat” the little sods who pitch up on my doorstep after dark, having nipped down to Jumbo’s and spent 75 cents on a fancy dress consisting of a plastic mask and an old curtain.  This year the horrible little cretins decided that my “trick” would be the hilarious jape of painting “A miserible old git lives hear”(sic) on my garage door.  How do you deal with such an outrage?

Auntie Prue says:

Dear Retired

The secret is to recruit your own grandchildren to go out and either collect lots of goodies for you or, even better, exact revenge on your enemies under the guise of “trick”.  I know this year I consider that the cost of a couple of cans of spray paint well worth the expense.
